"For fans of regional German music, this is the CD set you need. De Bläcke Fööss is a very popular group from Cologne in the Rheinland and their roots, Kölsch dialect and sense of history permeate their music. The songs on this album run the historical range from the Battle of Wörringen in 1288 up to the present. You do, of course, need to know that the majority of their songs are sung in the Kölsch dialect, although a few are sung in modern German. Even native Germans living outside of the Cologne area have difficulty in understanding "Kölsch" and there are many references to local Cologne institutions, historical events and so forth which might escape the uninformed listener. On the other hand, their music is so melodious, lively and downright enjoyable that it doesn't matter if you can understand them or not! Happily, the libretto in the CD case gives background on each of the songs. I became a fan of theirs a number of years ago when we visited Cologne and my enjoyment of their varied music has grown over the years. Try them, I think you'll like them!"
