The Alchemy of Bizet and Shchedrin

"The words "Transcribed" and "Arranged" come to mind when trying to describe the Shchedrin suite from Bizet's Carmen. But a more apt word may be "Alchemy". He has taken Bizet's music and created a wondrous amalgam that is greater than the sum of its parts. Shchedrin scored the music for strings and percussion only. A lot of strings and a lot of percussion. I have to say that this version of Carmen is the definitive one and it will spoil you for any other version. I have never heard the Carmen Fate motif expressed more vividly than in this work. I bought this CD because my original vinyl LP (c. 1967) has accumulated a lot of pops, clicks, and noise from overuse on my lathe of a turntable."
