"Whether you heard Bird York's song "In the Deep" in the film "Crash", or saw her perform the song live at the Academy Awards - do yourself a favor and check out this CD. You will absolutely not be disappointed. Bird's music is both sophisticated and at the same time quite sensual. There is also a meditative and even healing quality to many of the songs which I think is why director Paul Haggis chose "In the Deep" to play such a pivotal role in his film.
Two quick notes: - While the song is also featured on the excellent Crash soundtrack CD by Mark Isham - the advantage to this CD is that you'll discover that "In the Deep" is not a just a fluke but rather just one of many incredible songs by Ms. York.
Secondly - many of the songs appearing on this CD also appear on her previous CD "The Velvet Hour", which from what I've read was sort of an earlier version of this CD that she released prior to signing with a proper label. Bottom line - if you want to check out Bird's music - I would definitely start with this one."

"I had it on my wish list for a couple of weeks before ordering it. That's time I lost with this beautiful music. I love this CD- I'm listening to it over and over. Sultry, smooth vocals, resonating lyrics. The transitions are well done too, you're taken for a ride on a beautiful wave of emotion and harmony. You should have this CD."

"Truly there are no words to describe the bliss I feel when I listen to Bird York. Discovering her was the loveliest musical thing to happen to me in a long time. I always advise people to listen. She is an incredibly talented woman. Keep on making the music for us Bird, I can't get enough of it!!! The movie CRASH is what brought me to her music but I now own all of her albums. Do not miss them!"

"I bought this CD (from CD Baby) when it was originally released as The Velvet Hour. Soon afterwards, I bought Bird's earlier self-titled CD. Lyrics aside, Bird's voice and the melodies of the tracks are hypnotic, soulful and sultry. I can't hear enough of it. I'm glad that the extended version of In The Deep (from the Crash soundtrack) exposed Bird's talent and music to so many more people.
This CD is definitely my "desert island disc.""
For those of us who enjoy intense lyrics and a soothing soul

"If you haven't had a chance to buy this album, do yourself a favor and do so. This is one CD you can play from beginning to end, over and over, and each time find yourself discovering something new about each song. So glad she included the lyrics in the jacket.
Bird York has one of the most soothing voices I've heard, which reaches the depths of your heart, the most profoundly touching writing and a beautiful blend of instruments that make this CD a perfect Lounge CD. If you have found yourself taken away by the song In the Deep, from the movie Crash, you know what I mean.
Of course, In the Deep is one of the many songs in this album that will take you into a world you may, and at the same time, may not know.
My favorites here, besides In the Deep, are:
Track 2 - Remedy - Makes you want to take a long drive along the country roads. Love the acoustic guitar in this piece. The lyrics alone will make you think of that special someone...
Track 3 - Wicked Little High --- Oh haven't we all been there. The lyrics will make you smile and think of that one Mr. or Ms. Wrong in your life: "You're a wrong turn/a big fat No/you're the fifth drink before a long drive home...the bars to my cage, you're all I think about everyday..." A must listen to. You'll find yourself singing that one quite a bit.
Track 9 - Lovely Thing - Perfect song for those of us who have been filled with the wonderful gift of love. She couldn't describe the feeling better: "....I'm bursting with everything.../Love is filling me up/it's taking the edges off my heart../I'm floating just like a leaf in its stream..." A hymn to being in cloud 9.
Track 10 - Come be with me -- Talk about setting the one you love free (hopefully so they come back). Beautiful melody accompanied by her wonderfully soothing voice.
Track 12 - Have No Fear - A lovely little tune that you can dedicate to those special troubled people in your life. If you love them, dedicate this song to them. It'll convey your message well and touch their heart. So, if you do, you better mean it.
Overall, this is the CD you want to listen to, all day, in your car, play on a date (whether it is in your car or at home with candlelight and a nice bottle of wine).
Bird York is not only one of the deepest and most intense lyric writers and performers I know, but she's also multitalented. If you ever have had the joy to see her perform, live, you'll see how comfortable she is going from the keyboard to the guitar, to singing, and we've all seen her as an actress. What she writes, she has written from her heart.
What's more, she takes the time to reach to her fans personally. She's not only talented but a truly caring human being. (And I fear that as she grows more and more famous, there may be some who may want to take advantage of that). Her voice and talent are the gift by which she wants to reach out to the world and touch us in the heart. Let's give her a chance to do that.
One last thing. She has a nice message about piracy. I respect it and cheer her on for reminding us that it is by selling CDs that an artist makes a living. Too many of us have forgotten that. I embrace that message and commend her for doing so.
I have MP3'd most of my CDs and have gotten rid of them. But this is one I'm keeping. I'm sure it'll touch you the way it has touched many of us already. Can't wait for her next one!
