CD ReviewsBill Brandon Samuel Moszynski | Toronto, On Ca | 03/15/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "I had never heard of Bill Brandon until I read a review of this cd in Living Blues and being a Southern soul fanatic, I decided to buy it and I made a good choice.
Brandon has a voice reminicent of Johnnie Taylor, smokey and gritty, and while hes no match for Taylor, he fares well on all of the material here, recorded between 1967 to 1976. Brandon excels on slower tracks, which there are plenty of, notably "Rainbow Road", "It's All Wrong, It's All Right" and a nice cover of "Take A Little Piece of My Heart". Brandon does deliver some up-tempo tracks in the Johnnie Taylor-style, including "Stop This Merry Go Round", while "Streets Got My Lady" is an up-tempo modern-soul groover. Brandon dropped out of the music business in the late 70's and apparently has no desire to return, but we can enjoy this fine collection of yet another Southern soul singer who never achieved the success they deserved." |
