"To be a fan of the blues is to be a fan of Big Maybelle. With her striking stage presence (which can be glimpsed in "Jazz on a Summers Day", to her powerful voice, Big Maybelle was not to be ignored. You seem to find Big Maybelle on Blues collections all over the place, but she is best heard on her own cd, where you can get a taste of her many styles, from funny, to rip your heart out sorrow, this cd offers the listener a taste of Maybelle before she became as famous as she did. You can almost hear the tentativeness in her voice on a few songs as if someone said to her to take it down a bit, but it doesn't take her long to let loose and the listener is in for a real treat.
If you are already a fan of Big Maybelle then this is a can't miss for you. This recording is her earliest recorded work and shows the making of a true blues legend. I stumbled upon Big Maybelle quite by accident about 10 years ago and have been looking for all that I can find on her since. Every little nugget that a record company releases is a true joy to me, so I can not recomend this cd highly enough. If you are wondering weather or not to purchase this cd, I say DO IT! Treat Yourself to an amazing performer. Once you are done pass the experience along to a friend. Lets all try to get the word out on the amazing talent known as Big Maybelle."
