Synopsis

Album Description
Acclaimed producer and instrumentalist BIBIO (aka Stephen Wilkinson) follows the album 'Ambivalence Avenue' with 'The Apple and The Tooth', a companion piece comprising four new Bibio tracks and eight remixes from names as diverse as CLARK and WAX STAG (aka FRIENDLY FIRES' ROB LEE). With 'The Apple and the Tooth' BIBIO once again plays to his strengths by showcasing a whole variety of songs, from lush introspective music collages to beats that could be like some long forgotten disco treasure dusted off. It would be hard to believe this was the work of one producer if it were not for the inimitable vintage imprint on his music. 'The Apple and The Tooth' is a new release that stands alone but also forms a companion piece to the album, featuring four brand new Bibio tracks and eight reworkings of album tracks - some haunting, some vibrant, all impressive - by artists renowned (CLARK, WAX STAG aka FRIENDLY FIRES), new (LETHERETTE, THE GENTLEMAN LOSERS) and very familiar (BIBIO reworks his track 'Palm of Your Wave' into a haunting waltz).

(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is my first Bibio purchase, having been impressed with the snippets of tracks I sampled before committing to buy. There is so much variety and color to this collection that it feels like a soundtrack to a really cool hipster film. The Apple and the Tooth is part EP/part remix CD. The EP part consists of 4 new songs from Bibio, although this only encompasses a small fraction of playing time, as most are under 3 minutes. The breezy vibe of these acoustic-meets-electronic compositions graces the front end of the CD with an effortless flow. Bibio's vocals are pleasant enough, and some of his melodies are quite addictive on the ears.

The remaining tracks consists of remixes of material from Bibio's Warp Records debut Ambivalence Avenue. Most hit the mark. Although I enjoy Clark's work his remix of "S'Vive" sounds a bit too familiar from him (and it sounds like he plagiarized his own "Gonk Roughage"). Wax Stag adds a think layer of lush keyboards to the sickly-sweet, chipmunk-pop of "Sugarette". "Lover's Carvings" has a nice Madlib-style vibe to it, courtesy of Letherette. All the other remixes are very good in their own way. Ironically the best remix track in this collection is from Bibio himself, who transforms his own "Palm of Your Wave" into a sweetly sad album closer, a seasonal contrast to the sunny demeanor of the opening tracks."
