"Affectionately called "Papa", this 18th-century composer certainly was prolific. Often called the Father of the Symphony, Franz Joseph Haydn pumped out at least 104 numbered Symphonies in his 77 years, quite a long life especially for that time period. While he was not the first composer of the Symphony, Haydn was the first to write them with real character and strength. Five of his well-known Symphonies are represented on this wonderful "Best Of" release on Naxos: 45, 94, 100, 101, and 104. These are performed nicely, conducted by Barry Wordsworth. Haydn also greatly developed the String Quartet during his lifetime. Two excellent movements from a couple of his Quartets are included on this CD. Also, single movements, each from a Concerto for Cello, Piano, as well as his famous one for Trumpet and Orchestra, are here. "Papa" Haydn also penned many Piano Sonatas (solo piano), and a very nice selection from one rounds out this fine CD. This classical label, Naxos, is very well-known as the unquestioned leader in quality, BUDGET classical recordings for over 20 years now. Of my 500-plus classical CDs in my personal collection, over 100 of them are from this great Naxos label. I recommend many of their CDs, including this one without reservation."
