Not His Best

"Nearly all the tracks are with Shirley Scott on organ plus bass, drums, and the occassional added instrument. "The Rev" is really the only such track that moves me. Jaws' best work was with Count Basie. If you want a good small group session, get "Night Hawk" where Eddie duets with Coleman Hawkins.
TWO YEARS LATER:
I have to confess that some of my initial negative reaction to this CD was due to that organ (gets my vote for the most non-jazz instrument except maybe for the harp). I've kind of learned to mentally push it back in the mix and focus my ears on the sax. "Last Train From Overbrook" and a wonderful Oliver Nelson "Trane Whistle" (only large group session here) add nicely to the Jazz Train Songs book. "Body And Soul" is of interest since his mentor (Coleman Hawkins) owns the franchise on this song. Since Jaws' main output was on Prestige, I take back "Not his best". If Amazon allowed changes to the star ratings in the review, I'd give this 4 stars today."
