Lost British Jazz
Joe Sixpack -- Slipcue.com | ...in Middle America | 10/02/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The missing link in the tale of British "sweet band" jazz, bandleader Bert Firman preceded most of the better-known dance band leaders by a good five years or more. From 1924-28 he was the musical director for the HMV label's popular music imprint, Zonophone, and he swiftly established his jazz cred by recording several early compositions by Duke Ellington and the Gershwin brothers, among others. The style on the two dozen mostly-instrumental tunes gathered here is delightfully rinky-dink and antique, in the best sense possible. Fans of other soft-edged British ballroom artists such as Ambrose or Roy Fox will definitely want to check this disc out; they were great, but Firman was first."
Get what his band has...RED-HOT jazz!!!

"Birt Firman and whichever orchestra he plays with is great. I don't know what he is as a musician, but I love all his recordings. I first heard him on the Charleston Era CD, also released by ASV, and he and the orchestra or something were playing "Charleston Charley". IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD!!! VERY hot jazz. So I got this, and I am glad I did. Birt Firman is now my favorite. I was hoping to find a recording of a song called "You Got Em" by him, but I did not find it. I heard it once, and I would love to hear it again. Still, this CD is great. The recordings are restored, and they're clear, and the music is a joy to hear. It brings back the era of hot dance. I used to take tap classes, when i was really little, but now I take ballet, because my mom wants me to. I wish I could do tap again. Then it would sound cool with the metal when I do the Charleston. I learned it, and I love sometimes dancing to these songs. How kids my age today can be listening to rap and R&B today when there is wonderful, complex sounding stuff like this, I don't know. Hooray for Birt Firman!!"
