"Composer Helmut Lachenmann has long associated himself with the world of noise. That is, he has chosen, for his life-long aesthetic, the adventure in capturing the beauty of noise through music. Lachenmann feels that it is the marriage of the different timbral signatures of noise that gives this style music its beauty."Allegro Sostenuto" exemplifies Lachenmann's multi-timbral 'noise nests' that enthralls me upon each listening. The pointillistic qualities of these 'nests' are in stark contrast with momentary pauses of silence. Although much simpler in design, "Kinderspiel," shows Lachenmann's lighter side. He discovers a musical haven through the realization of children at play. It is quite evident that Lachenmann has successfully tapped into the spirit of the child when writing these wonderful pieces for piano. The performances of Bach, Smeyers, and Wambach exude great spirit and technical proficiency in playing these works. This CD comes well recommended for those interested starting a collection of Helmut Lachenmann's music."
