CD ReviewsBuy the newer remastered release. Vinyltown | Northampton, MA | 08/07/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Buy the newer remastered reissue ASIN (B00005TOXZ). Better cover. Stay away from the Collectibles 2-on-1 as they eliminate one song from this album to fit 2 records on 1 CD. Shame on Collectibles!" As crisp and creative as ever. T Helgason | 07/30/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "I clearly recall the day when my father brought home this album (the cover on the vinyl version differs from that on the CD.) I simply did not want to stop listening to it. Almost 40 years later, I still can not get Hamp's solos on "seven Come Eleven" and "Four Once More" out of my head.
This album was originally recorded in 1963, 25 years after the Quartet's famous Carnegie Hall concerts. It's hard to tell that 25 years had passed, though, as the quartet of Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa are as tight and as crisp as ever. The songs cover many styles, from the torchlight moodiness of "I've Got it Bad And That Ain't Good", to the up-tempo jammming on "Seven Come Eleven" and "Runnin' Wild". The counter melodic interplay between Hamp and Teddy Wilson during many of Hamp's solo jouneys is a gift to the listener. The orginal 1963 recoding is of exceptinal quality and clarity, making the reissue on CD that much easier. If you're checking out Benny Goodman for the first time, this is a great catch. If your a connoisseur, this is a great catch. Enjoy! " |
