(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD has sound engineering that is better balanced than in its companion volume, if slightly less brilliant. The collaboration of the two artists is well depicted. I first came into contact with Csaba Onczay via an excellent Hungaroton LP of the Lalo and Schumann Concertos. I later heard him play the Dvorak and Schumann Concertos with a community orchestra in Livingston, N.J. His tone as depicted on this CD is the way I remember it. He does not play with the lustrousness of Yo Yo Ma or so many other American trained cellists. Rather, his tone is somewhat dry and woody, but with excellent articulation. He has superb musicality. Hearing him play the Op. 102 Sonatas, one is never aware of how formidable they can be, considering how clearly and directly Onczay plays them. The pride of all the Beethoven cello and piano works, Op. 69, is absolutely charming, with a songfulness that never takes itself too seriously. As in the companion CD, Jeno Jando's playing is the equal of anyone's I've heard in these pieces, both warm and brilliant. If you have one of the more famous recordings of the complete set, I would recommend acquiring this CD for a refreshing alternative version."
