Soheil Nasseri Recording Is Impressive On All Counts
David P. Lamarche | New York, N.Y., USA | 04/05/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)
"I'm already familiar with Mr. Nasseri's Beethoven playing, from his New York recitals. He understands how to create structure, drama, and moments of expressive detail. He is a clean, relaxed, and technically secure player, and it shows in his Beethoven Sonata #4. The Rachmaninov was a pleasant surprise, because it generated warmth and depth, without being overly sentimental. And it showed that he employs different sound palettes for different composers. I should listen to the Sorabji more; on one hearing, it's a little too much to digest. I couldn't help, however, being enormously impressed by his command of the technical aspects of this piece.
In short, Mr. Nasseri deserves a wider audience. There is always room for an intelligent, musical pianist who has something to say, especially in this age of empty virtuosi. I look forward to more recordings.

A remarkable debut

"With this recording, the young US-born pianist Soheil Nasseri gives a remarkable debut, showing superb technical command of his instrument as well as sensitive and powerful musicality. His interpretation of Beethoven's quite difficult early Sonata No.4 is fresh, vigorous and avoids sentimental romanticism - while being absolutely convincing with its poetic and deep calmness of the wonderful second Movement. Equally convincing are the third (Allegro) and fourth (Allegretto) Movement with their comparably light and charming approach.
Rachmaninov's Sonata No. 2, being a highly romantic, emotionally and technically exhausting piece of piano music, places quite different demands on the pianist's abilities. Nasseri masters these difficulties superbly, playing with suggestive power and concentration.
But the most perfect interpretation on this exciting recording - at least so it seems to me - is the Sonata No. 0 of the late composer Kaikhosru Sorabji. This Sonata, being extraordinarly difficult and reminicient of late Scriabin, is a fascinating and dizzying piece of music. Nasseri's playing is masterful, technically as well as in its intelligent and sensitive apprehension. - All in all, a convincing debut and a highly talented pianist, who surely will be heard of more in the near future.

Excellent

"Nasseri proves himself again with this recording, as he does in his spirited live performances, as one of the great technical masters in classical piano today. He shows off his prowess with pieces by two of his favorite composers, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Anyone who loves these two composers, should definitely listen to Nasseri's intense and impassioned interpretation."
What a musician!

"Having been a Sorabji junkie for over 20 years, it is always exciting to see brave new souls try their hands at his music. Soeheil Nasseri's playing is purely elegant and sophisticated. My hat's off to him!"
