When a car accident on a Roman road took Dinu Ciani (1941-1974) from us, we lost a pianist who had already fulfilled his one-time teacher Cortot's description of him as, "an example of a youth possessing the rarest gifts bestowed by nature, able to perceive the real balance of creative invention in a variety of manifestations." After hearing his studio recordings and live performances on other labels, it will not be long before the listener is won over by the elegance, creativity and imagination in his solo repertory. Ciani, however, loved to play with an orchestra, and the conductors he played with had the highest regard for his partnership, but regrettably only a few of his live concerto recordings have been available. The present offering will help to fill that gap. Ciani's clear-cut conception with dashes of Romantic detail goes convincingly well with these two Beethoven concertos. The First Concerto, with Bartoletti conducting, was recorded live in 1973. The Third Concerto, conducted by Gui, was recorded live in 1970.
