I wish I could play like that....

"Yukie Nagai blew me away when I listened to her recording of the final movement of the Moonlight Sonata, "Presto agitato." Her recording of this movement is definitive, it is my favorite of many recordings, how I wish I could play that piece as exquisitely as she. The recording only reminds me why I so fell in love with this movement, which started my Beethoven obsession. She captures the hysteria and pathos like no other, creating an electrifying tidal wave of emotional while maintaining unbelievable control, which in a piece like that is no easy feat! She also does a very nice first movement; unlike many she does not take it too fast and it is does not sound mechanical. I'm quite glad she chose Op. 90--she does justice to both the turbulent first movement and bring a tender beauty to the gentle second movement of this wonderful and too often neglected sonata. She also is able to give Op. 109, one of Beethoven's most beautiful works, the transcendent and heavenly quality it needs. I highly recommend this recording for lovers of the Beethoven sonatas, and if you aren't a lover of them yet, this is a great way to get to know them! :-)"
