Beethovenian F. Ries produced this piano Quartet reduction of the Master's ground-breaking Third Symphony. This version gives us a clinical view of the massive bones beneath the living flesh of this ruddy corpus.
Schönberg created the opposite effect in his brilliant orchestration of Brahms' g-minor Piano Quartet (Op. 25), when he added colourful layer upon layer of fantastic raiment on the pallid nude of the original.
All highly recommended.
Schoenberg: 5 Pieces for Orchestra: Cello Concerto; Brahms: Piano Quartet
Johannes Brahms: Piano Quartet In G Minor, Op. 25/Variations And Fugue On A Theme By Handel, Op. 24
Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht; Pelleas und Melisande
In conjunction, Mozart too reduced some of his piano Concerti for piano Quintet:
Mozart: Piano Concertos 6, 8, 11-14 (Chamber versions)
