"It is interesting how most renowned pianists record the Diabelli Variations in their later years. There are a number of performances on disc that are of outstanding quality and it is unreasonable to say that one particular version is the finest. The true Beethoven/Diabelli fan should have multiple interpretations in their collection.
This live 1988 Russian recording has Richter in peak form giving a muscular performance of this supreme Beethoven composition. Richter is expert at holding the structure of the piece together and capturing the different moods of the individual variations. His technical prowess is unquestioned. The piano tone has a slightly tinny quality but the sound is generally quite acceptable. Apart from a few coughs, the audience is silent. The Mozart Piano/Violin Sonata is an enjoyable and worthwhile coupling.
This version can sit quite comfortably alongside other superb renditions of the Diabelli Variations. These include Serkin (Sony), Stephen Kovacevic (Onyx), Brendel (Philips), Pollini (DG) and Schnabel (Naxos)."
