"Daniel Muller-Schott (violoncello) and Angela Hewitt (piano) combine forces for a superb recital of Beethoven's first three sonatas for Cello and Piano. The first 2, Op 5 No 1 (in F) and No 2 (in g minor), are skillfully done, with spectacular technique and strong musicality. The highlight of the disc (and indeed, in my mind, of all of Beethoven's sonatas for cello and piano) is No. 3 in A major, Op. 69. There, both participants let 'er rip with a superb mastery of the piece's technical difficulties, all the while letting the tension and tumult bubble up. These two play superbly together. I have heard them in recital once, performing Bach's Viola da Gamba sonatas, and they do not disappoint in their first Beethoven disc. I look forward to a follow-up disc where we can hear the remaining sonatas, plus (I hope) some of the Variations.
May I add a suggestion? Please add a talented violinist (e.g. Christian Tetzlaff) and record the Piano Trios."
