CD ReviewsPretty unbelievable music Nuno Leal Da Silva | Lisboa, Portugal | 08/10/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Tha name says it all. This is absolute beach house music. This is music from Ralph lauren catalog people somewhere in Maine, Long Island, Vermont. Cocktails and beautiful smiles among autumn first and shy raindrops. This is autumn desert beach windy day music. At some point these songs will recall you United States of America and consequently Broadcast and Pram (especially the voice and the organ sounds). At some point Moondog from his first album (the sparse orchestrations, minimal) or even Slowdive (from Pygmalion) or Mojave 3. But this couple doesn't stay still under their influences. They goes further on other directions. They are on a more intimate sort of way, a more happy sad way, almost as high as was Nico from Marble Index or Desertshore. A classic must-have." Haunting, beautiful music Joseph Broze | chicago | 06/28/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "I don't know if this band really sounds like Mazzy Star or Slowdive...but they are certainly influenced by them. I saw them at Emo's in Austin and the Subterranean in Chicago and I was floored by their live performace (despite the amazing amount of douchebags that feel the need to chit-chat while bands are playing...go to a bar where bands aren't playing you mongoloids!!!). This CD is very, very, very good. There are all sorts of influences...maybe a little shoegaze, Magnetic Fields, aforementioned bands, and whatever else. I am not sure what else to say. "Tokyo Witch" is one of the best songs I have heard in the past couple years. I am very excited to see them for a third time in one year at the Pitchfork festival this summer. Folks...listen to the songs on the band's myspace site and if you dig them: buy the CD. It really grows on you. Solid music here, I hope they do another album." It's ok if you want to sing along... superinkygrrl | Portland, OR | 11/12/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "Beach House is one of those bands that didn't grab me right away. It's been over a year since their album came out and I'm just now getting excited over it. I even saw these guys live last year and even then they didn't catch my attention. But that's exactly why I've grown to love this album so much over the last few months.
This album is unpretentious and quiet; it doesn't try to smack you over the head. There is a somewhat deceptive, childlike simplicity to the rhythms (sounds like they pulled them right off the portable casio) that threw me off guard at first, which probably explains why it took so long for them to get under my skin. Then, seemingly all of the sudden, I found myself singing along and wondering why the album was so short and why hadn't I been listening to this band non-stop for the last 12 months? The standout track for me is "Heart and Lungs". It's an unusual structure for a song: one verse, one chorus, some oohs and ahhs and then it's done... almost... I won't give away the ending; suffice to say, it's worth the wait. Beach House is not recommended for those who like Top 40. Side effects may include uncontrolled singing along and head swaying." |
