"Friends is the best Beach Boys album ever made and one of the finest by any band ever. There is not one bad track. A true group effort. Stunning contributions by Dennis. Amazing production by Brian. Busy Doin' Nothin' is incredible.Friends, Anna Lee, Wake The World, the list goes on. Contrast this with Pet Sounds. The stylistic differences and production values are incredible. The most versatile and experimental pop group in history. What Happened?!!!??"
Interesting, though unexceptional post-Pet Sounds discs

"After the "double commercial debacle" of the Smiley Smile and Wild Honey LP's, the Beach Boys rebounded (artistically, not commercially) with the incredibly pleasant "Friends" LP.The vocals are lush and soaring, the instrumentation continues along the quirky lines that Brian started using around the time of "Pet Sounds", though on this LP it is really quite understated, with some quiet instrumentals, and many vocal passages accompanied by only one or two instruments. The melodies throughout this LP are unusually compelling. There's also a couple of tracks that venture from the standard 4/4 beat featuring waltz and bossa nova time signatures. This LP marks the emergence of Dennis Wilson as a songwriter and vocalist, with two credits in each department. Overall, this is a real sleeper!"20/20" was cobbled together from singles, unreleased "Smile"-session tracks and a few new tracks. The liner-note writer seems to think it's one of their stronger LPs. Perhaps the music is just more challenging than "Friends", but as an LP "20/20" just isn't as immediately appealing. There are some great tracks (including the singles "Do it Again" "I Can Hear Music" and "Bluebirds Over the Mountains"), but there is a lack of cohesiveness that makes the programming less than inspiring. "I Can Hear Music" shows how good a study Carl Wilson had been of Brian's production and singing. "Smile" era tracks such as "Our Prayer" and "Cabinessence" further one's wonder about what "Smile" would've sounded like.Besides the two full length LP's there are five bonus tracks, including the single "Break Away" (written by Brian Wilson and his dad, Murry), as well as Dennis Wilson's "Celebrate the News", an outtake from the "Friends" LP called "We're Together Again", a fascinating fragment of Brian Wilson singing the Burt Bacharach song "Walk on By", and an unfinished versions of Old Folks at Home and Old Man River.Overall this isn't the strongest of the Capitol Beach Boys reissues, but it has its moments."
