Synopsis
Amazon.comHere's a major label debut that doesn't disappoint. For starters, Midwestern piano trio the Bad Plus--in the same vein as Dave Douglas or Brad Mehldau--clearly know a thing or two about how to mix pop music with forward-thinking jazz. The group covers Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," and Aphex Twin's "Flim" with wit, virtuosity, and respect to the originals--these interpretations never sound in the least bit cliched or overwrought. But even the new material on These Are the Vistas is loaded with infectious hooks. Ethan Iverson uses the entire range of his piano with speed and dexterity; David King's drum fills are deftly placed, at times harkening more to electronica music's lightening fast percussion flourishes than anything on the jazz scene; and bassist Reid Anderson somehow keeps up with the madness and maintains a steady beat. Amidst all the fun is a dynamic record that holds your attention. A wonderful effort. --Jason Verlinde

Jessica T. (jessicatok) from LINCOLN, NE Reviewed on 4/23/2007... I love piano rock and piano-based jazz. That being said, this is not your mother's dinner-party ambiance music. Combining rock sensibility and modern jazz into one album, the critically acclaimed "These Are the Vistas" surprised and delighted me. While the "Teen Spirit" and "Heart of Glass" tracks are a treat and original reworkings of the well-known hits, the other tracks are equally as lovely and energetic (Boo-Wah!). I found myself immediately hooked by the progressions of the first track, "Big Eater," drawn to the melodious piano lines of "1972 Bronze Medalist," and the meandering, ethereal feel to "Everywhere You Turn." This isn't "new age" jazz, but it is modern, so be prepared... don't expect Coltrane, expect a drum, a piano, and a bass. 1 of 1 member(s) found this review helpful.

Modern Jazz Done Right... Scott Hart | LA, CA | 03/08/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "Upon purchasing this album for the 2nd time, I'm glad that I did. I do have to say that you have to like jazz to really enjoy and appreciate this album though. It's not for today's popular music audience. It's also not for the fans of old jazz either. The covers of recent popular music hits (Smells Like Teen Spirit / Heart of Glass) are excellent tunings that provide enough differentiations to make them beat alone. This album has a weird and small audience so I'm not recommending it to everyone but to those few who enjoy modern jazz with a flair, give it a try and you won't be disappointed."
