CD Reviews

EVERYBODY, QUICK--TO THE "BACK ROOM"!!!
Darrell L. Lee | Jackson, MS | 04/28/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"What a pleasure it was to discover this 2 disc set in my local record store that allows you to sample before you buy...usually the entire song and not the :30 snippets here on Amazon--but I seriously digress! I was amazed by the sounds I heard on "Back Room"...a collection of 22 tracks that are every bit hypnotic as they are funky. Each song is masterfully mixed into the next, never tempting you to push the skip button.

Disc 1 offers some serious atmospheric deep funk house from the likes of King Britt, Scuba, Aya, The Rurals, H-Foundation and a host of others.

Disc 2 offers a little more psychedelic funk with that ol skool soul/disco flavor. There's more vocals on Disc 2, usually from unknowns (at least to me), but they're always excellent and never obtrusive.

"Back Room" is original, refreshing and very entertaining. I wasn't disappointed at all for what I paid for it ($20+). Yeah, I could've ordered it "used" for a cheaper price, but this disc sounded too good to sit and wait 7-10 business days for delivery. "Back Room" is great for any party occassion. It's laid-back enough for chillin', yet fast enough for getting your guests up and shakin' that ass! Highly Recommended!!!"
Smooth N Easy but still "House"

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This easily digestible compilation of mid-level, relaxing, deep house tracks is smooth and tasteful but contains just a hint of up tempo vibrancy. The mix is skilled, seamless and professional by nature and illustrates the range and capabilities within the DJ's and producers involved in this project.

Disc 1 is slanted slightly down tempo, perfectly matched for relaxing in the loft, or preparing for a sensuous evening with a chosen one.

Disc 2 leans distinctly up-tempo and at several points, delves effortlessly into the corners of "old school" R&B. The vocals on Crazy P "Kicks" are chocolate sweet with a hint of deep-house caramel coating, which pours smoothly into Maddslinky's "Something Extra". These two cuts are easily the sweetest tracks on the set and to be honest, are so mean they should be getting radio airtime.

Note: Pay extra attention to the first 3 cuts on Disc 1; they exude an entrancing tone and are a bit off-center. You will not be disappointed.

I'm an old Baltimore "Househead" from the 80's when Wayne Davis was shuttin it down at O'Dell's and Ed Fennessey was blastin it on the Big Ole Funky V, so high praise doesn't flow easily from this "House".

Verdict: This is a must have for all deep house fans and househeads.
