Synopsis

Album Description
"His playing has lilt and considerable charm...a consummate musician whose respect for all varieties of music remains consistently fresh" - Audiophile EditionArthur Loesser (1894-1969) was a fine pianist, teacher, and music critic for many years in Cleveland, as well as the author of the classic book, Men, Women, and Pianos. Arthur Loesser's half-brother Frank was the famous Broadway composer of Guys & Dolls and How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Loesser made his professional debut in 1913 and toured the Far East with violinist Mischa Elman. He was more active as an accompanist and teacher than as a recitalist, but his few recordings (this 3 CD set was recorded in 1961) are all the more treasured for that.

CD Reviews

A delightful treat

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Arthur Loesser first came to my attention from a release on the Marston label- a disc I would highly recommend(contains the one of the finest Prokofiev 5's I know of) On that disc were several Bach pieces, all of which made me yearn to here him in similar repertoire(or any rep for that matter)

So I could barely contain my excitement when I saw this release. It is excellent, though I wouldnt rank it above Richter, Feinberg(which I received at the same time and now consider my favourite version), Glenn Gould, Koroliov, or Angela Hewitt's.

If you are a WTC buff, like I am---you need this. Many of the Prefug are done very differently here, some for the better, though some come off sounding rather Kitschy.

Overall though, the playing is very good, and the returns are fun, entertaining, and very unique. If you were to get just one version, I wouldt get this, but if you are familiar with the rep, dont wait another minute."
