"Kirkpatrick's clavichord performance of the second half of J. S. Bach's "Well Tempered Clavier" sparkles with ample warmth and lyricism. In Kirkpatrick's hands, the clavichord comes across as a wonderful blend between a pipe organ and harpsichord. His playing is more graceful than what you'd expect on the piano, replete with gentle, dulcet tones on the clavichord. Yet it isn't only his choice of instrument, but also his careful phrasing which makes this among the finest performances I have heard of Bach's scores. The sound quality is quite impressive, replete with much atmosphere and warmth. This has been regarded as one of the foremost recordings of Bach's "Well Tempered Clavier" by classical music critics; now Deutsche Grammophon has made it available once more as one of its classic recordings."
