"Oboeist Ingo Goritzki collaborated with violinist Christoph Poppen and Bach specialist Helmuth Rilling and his Stuttgart Bach Collegium on this fine and well-played collection of oboe concerti. They recorded this for release during the Bach year of 2000 when Hanssler Classics was among the companies dedicated to recording and selling every piece of music Johann Sebastian penned in his long life.
Owing to Rilling's personal historical approach that is tempered by using modern instruments and a moderate approach to both scholarship and tempi, this collection will neither completely delight period enthusiasts nor completely alienate old timers that have grown up loving Heinz Holliger's Philips recording of the three most famous oboe concertos, the best-selling LP/CD in history in this music. For everyone else it will shed a lot of light on Bach style and delight woodwind enthusiasts not aligned with either the new or old guards.
If you line up with one of the opposing armies on either side of the scholarship argument, why should you investigate this issue? Because the musical values are sound, the playing is always sprightly and true, and Goritzki has a nice & somehwat unique sound, sure technique, and temperate approach that will appeal to many listeners. In addition, the compilation includes five concerti and 15-tracks -- the three standard oboe concerti, the double for oboe and violin, and a transcription of Bach first violin concerto -- making this a geneours offering and real good considering the price you can pay for it through an Amazon vendor.
Excellent notes and packaging accompany this fine issue from the most recent Bach year that should make this, even 7 years after that celebration ended, a contender for anyone that wants to collect selected oboe concerti by J.S. Bach. Buy and enjoy while it's available since the classical music industry shows up daily that won't always be the case."
