"(This review applies to all four volumes of this series:)... so, several years ago I was listening to some Bach lute music and wondering if anyone had recorded these transcriptions complete - the six solo violin sonatas and partitas and six cello suites. I posed the question on the Internet and found this set which I promptly popped for immediately (at that time it was not available on Amazon.com). And it's one of my favorite recordings.I can't say that this set is definitive - there are too many other lute players that have recorded Bach that I haven't heard. But I have not heard anyone that has combined the Nigel North's warmth and technique with the great sound I hear on this set. Highlights include the Fugue from the g minor sonata, the Chaconne from the d minor partita, and the cello suite #3 in G. This is the sort of playing that makes you want to put on headphones and turn it up to catch every nuance. Recommended unconditionally, especially for those who like Bach on classical guitar; the difference between lute and guitar adds a whole dimension to this music."
