Synopsis

Album Details
While Ivo Pogorelich Established his Reputation Performing Mainly Romantic Repertoire, his Few Forays Into the Baroque Reveal Him to Be an Equally Engaging- If Not Eccentric Musician Here as Well. In Quicker Movements, Such as the Opening Preludes of the English Suites for Instance Pogorelich's Rhythmic Control and Contrapuntal Clarity Are Simply Amazing. Slower Movements Likewise Are Handled with Remarkable Intensity and Delicacy. Pogorelich's Performances of Four Scarlatti Sonatas Concluding the Program as Well Are Wonderfully Animated and Knowing.

CD Reviews

Breathtaking Performances of Amazing Pieces
R. Williams | Los Angeles, CA United States | 09/24/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's great to see these recordings available again. Those who've heard the rattle trap about Ivo being brash, irreverent and unschooled ought check this out. The funny thing is that despite the fact that there are a lot of great Ivo discs, this is the best I think. In place of the overt pyrotechnics, there is a mixture of spellbinding rhythmic intensity and amazing touch. It helps that these are among Bach's most hypnotic pieces. The first movements of both of these suites are amazing, constructed of repeating figures that anticipate some of Beethoven's great constructs (like the Eroice and the Scherzo from the 9th). For those who think that Bach's rounds can be dry and academic, and Ivo brash and uncouth, meet the wonders of a happy marriage of seeming opposites."
A Brilliant New Performer -- Glenn Gould's Successor
Thomas J. Donahue | Grand Haven, Michigan | 08/21/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I stayed at a friend's house in southern France last week and he played this CD and said, "Guess who the performer is!" I immediately said, Glenn Gould. He gleefully said "No!" Obviously I couldn't guess "Ivo Pogorelich", because I never heard of him. Had I listened a little longer I would have figured out that it wasn't Glenn Gould because there was no soft moaning in the background.

Ivo Pogorelich is the best pianist I've ever heard. I'm astounded that Amazon doesn't even list his name among the thousands of Bach and D. Scarlatti recordings. I had to look at AMAZON.CO.UK to find the right disc (that's where my friend found it too). The location there is at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000012VI/stereophonicso05/202-8558783-8952662

There are also a bunch of customer reviews, and ALL OF THEM GIVE THIS CD FIVE STARS!

Pogorelich's playing is so clear, his melodic lines so distinct, his touch so light, and his phrasing so perfect that this music will thrill and transport you to another world.

I plan to use this CD in my music literature class next semester. His melodic lines are so distinct that even a beginner will be able to distinguish one line from another. I find that beginning students have real difficulty distinguishing one melodic line from another when listening to counterpoint, particularly when all the lines are played by the same instrument (e.g., piano or harpsichord).

Amazon.com should at least put a few auditory samples from this CD on it site, and state the name of the pianist. I recommend that Amazon.com feature this CD as a Classical CD of the Month or some similar promotion so that sophisticated music lovers in the US can discover this brilliant, eccentric, Yugoslav pianist.

Individuality at its best

"The recording is 20 years old but the performance is cutting edge. Pogorelich extracts beautiful sounds from the very demanding slow movements and is virtually unchallenged in this respect. The faster movements are equally breathtaking.

First rate insight and delivery show the Suites as absolute equals to the WTC and the Art of Fugue. This is a very fine recording of a keyboard work."
