"I have many recordings of this work. I would say that this version uses a modern violin, but giving deference to historical performing practice. The sound quality is excellent. The price is very good. I paid under $20.00 for two discs. I like the packaging insofar as it is like a book in style rather than using a jewel box. You open it up like a book and one disc is on each side. It is nice that this kind of packaging takes less shelf space than the prior versions of the double jewel boxes (especially before the "slim-line" jewel boxes. There is no documentation which is unfortunate. I would have liked to read more about these works and the artists featured on this set.
I love listening to this set. I listen to it often especially at night while reading in bed. The violin playing is exemplary and the harpsichord is mostly accompaniment. There is not much by way or of ornamentation on the part of the harpsichord. My point is that it is far more than "background," but it is not overly busy or fussy.
The bottom line is really that these sonatas are wonderfully played. I really recommend this recording. I have enjoyed other recordings by Ehnes too."
