CD Reviews

It's a disco era classic.

"You probably know all about Baccara.

Well, this CD contains almost all the good parts there is to know, without any of the really bad B sides from their career. If you want to fill your house with deliciously vampy, dancable disco beats from thirty years ago, this is the perfect record to do it with.

The mastering is reasonable (giving the age of the originals) and the CD rips easily to MP3, so you can carry it wherever you go. If you're into that kind of thing, that is.

Good music, wrong product description, low quality CD

"I am not planning to review the music itself here, but have problems with the quality of this CD and its presentation on Amazon.com

First, be warned, that Amazon has wrong track listing. This CD has the following songs:

1. "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie"

2. "Sorry, I'm a Lady"

3. "Parlez-Vous Français?" (French version)

4. "Can't Help Falling In Love"

5. "Koochie-Koo"

6. "Cara Mia"

7. "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy"

8. "Gimme More"

9. "Granada"

10. "Number One"

11. "Darling"

12. "Ay, Ay Sailor"

13. "The Devil Sent You To Lorado"

14. "Feel Me"

15. "Adelita"

16. "Somewhere In Paradise"

17. "Hit Mix" ("Yes Sir I Can Boogie"/"Sorry I'm A Lady"/"Darling"/"The Devil Sent You To Lorado")

18. "Yes Sir I Can Boogie" (1999 karaoke version)

Additionally, at least one track (#15, Adelita) has obvious sound defects although I purchased this CD new.

And finally, please note that the track listing tha Amazon placed for this disk actually belongs to Baccara's "The Original Hits" compilation album. Regrettably, the track listing for that album on Amazon is also wrong

Which Baccara is this?

"LOL. Good old Baccara. My parents actually have their original album from 1977, in not-so-mint vinyl condition. I listened to it as a small kid, not understanding the lyrics. Obviously.

Baccara was a Spanish duo with most songs in English, and were immensely popular in Europe around 1977-80. One of their songs is still considered a classic and occasionally played on our radio stations: "Yes Sir, I can boogie". Years ago, "Sorry, I'm a lady" was also considered one of their best.

Weirdly, there are currently *two* duos named Baccara. The original duo split in 1981, but the two singers simply formed new duos, both of which use the original name. This CD apparently contains the old recordings of the "real" Baccara. I don't have it, and cannot vouch for the quality (the two other reviewers had mixed feelings about it).

A few years ago, one of the Baccaras made a quixotic appearance in the Swedish music contest Melodifestivalen, suitably dressed in blue-and-yellow miniskirts. Their song isn't included on this compilation. And yes, they were voted out already in the first round.

It seems people have forgotten Baccara. Or at least one of them.

I'm not sure who will be attracted by this kind of disco pop today, with sexist and almost comically old fashioned lyrics. ABBA fans? There does seem to be a very distant relation, musically speaking. Still, as a nostalgia trip to a world long lost, I suppose Baccara are quite fine.

Four stars, for the concept.

And hey, let's be careful out there!
