CD ReviewsA New Low In Music History greysky | 06/12/2000 (1 out of 5 stars) "Whenever I write a review for something, I feel that a deep look into that thing is needed to properly judge it. It is hard to do this, though, with something as shallow and superficial as Britney Spears CD "Baby One More Time". However, I did look into it, but what I found was more disturbing than enjoyable.Throughout the history of music, there have always been the superficial pop artists- people who you either hate, love, or don't really give a care about. Britney Spears is a classic example of this sad phenomona- an utterly boring teen pop queen who thinks that music is simply about being the "hip" thing of the moment. Yes, she has some songs that are catchy, but in my opinion, not catchy-enjoyable; I was thinking more along the lines of catchy as in "GOD HELP ME RID MY HEAD OF THIS TUNE". And, while these songs may be "catchy", they certainly aren't artistic, or enjoyable in the long run. Britney pretends to express emotion, but none of her songs really express much of anything. The problem is that this music is simply the formula that people are willing to accept these days: fake, superficial synthesized music, accompanied by a young and only slightly talented voice. What makes it worse is that this music isn't what it appears to be: in truth, I doubt any of it was written by Britney herself. Believe me- in the corporate world, all these CD companies are trying to do is make money. The entire album is not aimed at being artistic, but rather engulfing today's youth in the current fad, while making as large a profit as possible. I've heard people say that they feel a real connection with Britney; I compare that to someone feeling a "real" connection to the guy at the fast-food counter who hands you your fries. The only connection she has with her fans is the worship that she accepts from them. Also, one of the biggest problems with the CD itself is the message it is communicating. In this day and age, when most teens are already very messed up and face hard decisions, do we really need pointless songs like "Soda Pop"? And, what no one seems to notice is the lyrics of the title track- what does "Hit me baby one more time" mean? Is it a sexual figure of speech? Or is it just to sound catchy? Or even worse, is it really just what it says? Are we promoting dating abuse by listening to it? Whatever it means, it can't be good.If the music isn't good, then why does it sell? (some of you may be asking) Well, two reasons. First of all, our society has come to accept the worst and most artificial of sounds to represent us. The second reason is very simple: many buy the CD just for it's so called "sexy" photo of Britney Spears. This is where it really get bad- many people don't care at all about the music. Hey, if they can jump on the bandwagon and get pretty pictures at the same time, they're in. It just proves an age old statement that you'd think we've overcome: sexuality sells. Sadly. Finally, I want to ask you, after reading this, what you think that this music is doing to the children and teens that listen to it? I feel sad just thinking about the girls obsessed with Britney, torturing themselves to look as thin and pretty as she does. (If she really does at all.) What kind of people are we to glorify Britney Spears, making her a role model for the youth of today? It is a vicious, self-destructive cycle this culture keeps going through, and we need to break out of it.The first step, my friends, is deciding not to buy CD's like this. I urge everyone who agrees with me to state their opinion, and be heard, and most of all, not to conform to these hideous standards set by society. And, on a closing not, I'd like to thank Amazon.com for having the bravery to let people speak their true opinion, and for letting them be heard. This is truly a revolutionary step in free speech." Britney Spears-Pop Princess sweetsapphire83 | TN | 11/17/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "When I first heard "Baby One More Time", I rejoyced. Finally, a pop princess for my generation. She can sing, dance, and videos are wonderful. Despite all the backlash (specifically the hater known as Misterjaw who refers to her as Bratney Sneers), I love her music. People are for the most part just jealous of her and insult her to make themselves feel good. It's not easy being in the public eye, and obviously Misterjaw doesn't know that." 1 of the best! sweetsapphire83 | 04/28/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "This cd is great, but don't take my word for it, cheak it out for yourself. If you're still not sure about the songs, here are 11 little reviews:Baby 1 More Time- The third best song on the album. This was the song that got her popular first, NO WONDER! It's so upbeat and has terrific backround music. 5/5(You Drive Me) Crazy- The fifth best song on the CD. I like the remix better, but it's still Fab! 5/5Sometimes- The fourth best song. Britney has really outdone herself with the slow songs, she does much better than Christina here. 5/5Soda Pop- There's no doubt about it, this song is GREAT! But it's only second best. I love the party sound to it. It's VERY cool. 5/5Born To Make U Happy- This song is absoluty the BEST song on the whole album! I love her voice in this song. No one else's soft sngs can compare with this one! 6/5From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart- Another great soft song. There's no possible way that Christina's song "I Turn To You" can surpass this one, I'd like to see her try! 5/5I Will Be There- Another great song. I love the upbeat sound and her voice in this song to 5/5I Will Still Love You- At first, I wasn't to fond of this song, but hey, I love it! I love the lyrics. Britney & Don make quite a duo. 5/5Thinkin' About You- Not the best song in the world, but okay. I really don't like the way it starts out but it turns out okay. 4/5E-mail My Heart- C'mon Britney, you can do better! I'm really not that fond of this song, but it's far better than any Christina song I've ever heard. 3/5The Beat Goes On- Returning to the sixties with Sonny & Cher. I think this remake is much better than the origonal. It's far better than Madona's remake of "American Pie" or Sixpence None The Richer's remake of "There She Goes". 5/5Average Score: 4.8 Total Score: 53/55"
