Synopsis

Product Description
Chicago is one of those unique cities that has always been on the pulse of vangard change in popular music. Although the city is known most for its blues, Chicago has also played a leading role in the performance, recording, and artistic evolution of jazz. The BMR4 (Bernhardt, Moynihan, Rodbard quartet), veterans of the Chicago music scene, have proved to be quite adaptable in creating noteworthy musical mixtures of all idioms. You can hear in their jazz sound, flourishes of the city's blues, rock and R&B scenes. The band is known for it s energetic and vigorous performances in which the repertoire leaps around from 60's modal jazz, standards, modern R&B, 12 bar blues, to unique interpretations of pop classics.

These cats can play!
Joel L. Parkes | Los Angeles | 05/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I became acquainted with BMR4 on my first trip to Chicago when, purely by luck, I heard them in concert at the Aquarium. I was blown away, and immediately bought their first CD. When I returned to Los Angeles, I got in touch with them about playing in one of the clubs out here, but I was told that they were a "local" Chicago band and didn't make it out to L.A. All I have to say is that they're the best local jazz band I've ever heard, and their sound is a bit different from that of the standard jazz quartet. Instead of a piano, BMR4 uses a guitar to comp behind the horn, in this case a very tasty tenor sax.

Their original tunes are great, and deserve to be played by other musicians (refreshing change, as a lot of "original" tunes don't deserve to be played by anyone) - their rapport is tight, the hard-earned result of having played together for years - and the musicianship is first-rate. These guys have chops, but they also have taste. This is really fresh music - ensemble jazz at its best."
