CD Reviews

"Timeless", yes, that describes it best.

""Oh, you gotta try this one." My brother handed me a disc that read "The Autumn Defense". "You like Wilco, right?" he asked.
"Oh yeah, but I gotta tell you, El, I think Summerteeth blows Yankee Foxtrot away. I don't really care for it all that much and have no idea why it is being put on the top of all of the 'Best Of...' lists."
"I know..." my brother agreed. "Well, this is more like Summerteeth..."
The Autumn Defense's 'Green Hour' has been in heavy rotation in both my house and car ever since. It is simply wonderful. I agreed with my brother's comparison at first, but after only a few listens, was struck by the little nuances that make this album so remarkable. At times it is more like Matthew Sweet doing country. Other times it's like Brian Wilson after stumbling upon the fountain of youth. All the time, however, it is comforting, engaging and completely enjoyable. It is not unlike anything that you have heard before, but that is part of its charm. It does not insult you by trying to be quirky or odd just for the sake of being odd or quikry. It is timeless music that, without taking aim at anything in particular, finds it's mark dead on.
"Here, you gotta try this..." I leaned over to my roommate and handed him a copy of 'The Green Hour' by The Autumn Defense. "It is one of the most enjoyable albums I have heard in a long time.""
