"I am not a typical Wagner fan, but enjoys Wagner's works very much.

Ms. Varnay's album was taken when the singer was quite young - she started singing Wagner at 23 or 24 on stage.

The recording accoustics are of course not the best, as several of the takes were made in 1942.

Even so, the singing is so superb that I cried as I listened to her Lohengrin, let alone other masterpieces from Wagner's later works like Gotterdamerung, Tristan und Isolde.

This is just what Wagner would have his heroic sopranos: young yet powerful, vibrant and at the same time also rich.

Varnay, unmistably the greatest Wagnerian soprano on record. I would say even greater than Kirsten Flagstad, who had the disadvantage of beginning to sing Wagner only after 40."
