"Paul Paray was music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1951-1963. Occasionally, he conducted his own scores in Detroit. Among the works I heard in person were the Joan of Arc Mass, Symphonies #1 and 2, the Fantasy for Piano and orchestra (with Jose Iturbi), and several orchestrated songs.
The new disc from Grotto productions confirms what I heard in the DSO performances in the 1960s: Paray's scores are first-class and deserve to be heard more often -- on record and in concert. The performances in this Grotto disc are positive and life-affirming. The ad hoc Orchestra, while not the Detroit Symphony of Paray's time, is excellent, nonetheless. Fr. Perrone is quite attuned to the difficulties of the scores, and while rhythm may occasional falter (something that never happened in a Paray-led performance!), all parties acquit themselves handsomely. This is a wonderful disc, filled with deeply committed music making. Heartily recommended!"
