Inspired by the work of Baylor University musicologist Bob Darden, God Don t Never Change is a celebration of vintage black gospel field songs ranging from the Blind Willie Johnson title track to the Washington Phillips tune Denomination Blues to the echoes of Mattie Moss Clark on Going To Heaven To Meet The King .
Ashley has worked hard to find her own place with an era of spiritual music that comes from a rich history of struggle and pain, more from open-sky fields than high-ceilinged cathedrals, but equally worshipful.
"To me the most amazing thing is people taking horrible pain and loss and allowing something God-given and beautiful to come of it, as opposed to succumbing to
bitterness," she says. "These songs speak to the sorrow in my own soul, and they re uplifting."
In the studio, Ashley surrounded herself with musical collaborators who knew her strengths intimately and could play to them without any hesitation. Starting with world-class producer and guitarist Kenny Greenberg with credits ranging from Faith Hill to Brooks & Dunn to Amy Grant to Steven Curtis Chapman to Gretchen Wilson to Etta James, and every musical point in between.
Adding to the mix was a band from back in the day Chad Cromwell on drums, Michael Rhodes on bass and Reese Wynans on B3 organ all of whom carry equally impressive musical resumes, and who have played with Ashley and Kenny for years. As with all music
that deals with The Word, the songs on God Don t Never Change find their power in the words. It s the work these songs were called to do, and it s the work Ashley Cleveland and so many around her are happy to help carry out.
This impressive set seamlessly weaves Cleveland s powerful, beautiful voice through an eclectic mix of timeless gospel songs.« less

"Right up front, I'll admit to a bit of bias being a long time fan (I still have a hand-written letter from her pre-email). On the other hand, I don't listen to much Christian music or openly celebrate my religion. That being said, this really is a great project that is a joy to listen to. Ashley puts her spin on a collection of open-sky field gospel tunes and they rock. I'll let other reviewers with more knowledge of gospel music make the comparisons; all I can say is I love good music and Ashley and Kenny continue to deliver, big time. I suspect those needing a lift will find it in this CD. Ashley's fans and A-Listers will no doubt eat this up and anyone discovering her for the first time will most likely be searching out her previous works. I always enjoy new music...even if it's old music...and this CD opens both my eyes and heart. Thank you, Ashley. Highly recommended."

"I am slightly partial to this artist's music, having been a fan from day one. That being said, this collection of songs is a breath of fresh air in today's formula-based Christian music arena. I can't even listen to Christian radio anymore because I know I'm going to be spoon fed music that's watered-down and void of any true creativity. You won't hear a voice like this on the radio...it's too real and convicting. The industry is too busy using technology to enhance the mediocrity of those who would be stars. It is clear to me when Ashley sings, she is singing from the depths of her own human frailty and need for a Savior daily. I admire her and her work and think this release represents exactly what is lacking in the music industry today...real musical authenticity. As with the rest of her work, this release will surely achieve critical acclaim amongst those who have an appreciation for truth in music that hasn't been tampered with by those would only see it as a means for profit. Ashley is a gem."

"My first Ashley Cleveland CD and I recommend it for those who like a bit more rock/blues than much offered in much of today's contemporary music."
A very special happening

"Ahsley's performance on this CD is incredible. Her interpretation of these old unfamiliar songs from our American history is priceless."
