Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Arturo Sandoval pays tribute here to Clifford Brown, the trumpeter who died in 1956 at age 25, but whose work remains a dominant influence on contemporary bop trumpeters. It's a thoughtful tribute, including a selection of Brown's own memorable bop anthems ("Daahoud," "Joy Spring," and "Blues Walk"), tunes associated with Brown (Bud Powell's "Parisian Thoroughfare" and Duke Jordan's "Jordu"), and two affecting tributes (Benny Golson's classic "I Remember Clifford" and Sandoval's own "I Left This Space for You"). Sandoval does these great tunes justice with a fine band spearheaded by pianist Kenny Kirkland and saxophonist Ernie Watts that's perfect for the idiom. Sandoval overdubs trumpet section arrangements of some of Brown's own quicksilver solos, paying homage in a way that combines the formalism and flamboyance that are the building blocks of the style. --Stuart Broomer

A Great Tribute to one of the most Complete jazz Legends
D. Hubbard | IL United States | 08/07/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album is a moving tribute to an artist who will never receive as much credit as he is due in the jazz industry. Any serious listener of jazz ought to know Clifford Brown as one of the gospels of jazz. Brown's brilliant trumpet playing was as responsible as any for the way jazz is today. That said, Sandoval's tribute to Brown comes as close to doing him justice as anyone could. The interpretation of Brown's solo in Cherokee is brilliant and inspired. The addition of Golson's "I Remember Clifford" plus Sandoval's own tribute to the master "I Left This Space For You" really provide a beautiful grounding to this, one of the greatest jazz tribute albums I've ever gotten my hands on. Sandoval does a great job on Cliff's classics, especially the pre-bop masterpiece of "Joy Spring". This album is a must have for any lover of trumpet, of jazz, or of the legends of music.

Unbelievable

"I'm a music student and my private teacher brought in this CD one day and I was amazed. I have never hear a trumpeter so fast or a tenor saxophone sound so good. This CD has a lot of centimental value to many, and I would recommend every musician, music lover, friend of a musician, everyone listen to this music. It will blow you away."

"This is an awesome CD. In memory of Clifford Brown, an excelent trumpet player. You can't go wrong with this CD and if you know the background of the CD it makes some of the songs much more enjoyable."
