CD Reviews

Never goes out of style
Aaron Barnhart | Kansas City | 08/06/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Other jazz experts have spoken more eloquently about how Artie Shaw completed his recording canon with these astonishing sessions, now being reissued for the first time in 17 years by UK's Nimbus. (Vol. 2 is due to reissue in the fall.) I'll just say that the analysis that Shaw managed to incorporate the parts of bebop that worked for him is spot on. And the use of a small ensemble instead of the big band that made him famous is, in addition to being a very Fifties idea, genius because it highlighted Artie's absolute mastery of his instrument.

I must listen to this thing a couple times a month -- this after several weeks in heavy rotation when I first got it -- and it's just one of the most satisfying albums I have. "Pied Piper Theme" and "Tenderly" are amazing, but the whole 2-CD set is one beautifully arranged number after the next. And so tightly mic'ed -- listen for Artie's clarinet buttons clacking!"
Shaw at his best

"Artie's very last recording was at his best, with a super backing group led by Hank Jones on piano. Best described as "Chamber Jazz". A must for any swing era nut!"
