"This box set collection of Arild Andersen's first three ECM recordings has made 2010 an exceptional year for me. I lost these three albums in the 80's when a moving company "misplaced" several of my ECM Recordings during a cross-county move from New York. Even though they reimbursed me for the loss, my collection was never the same. Now, ECM has finally opened their vaults and released these treasures on CD to restore my collection.
Andersen, an exceptional and virtuoso Bassist, has a solid foundation in Free Jazz, the chops of a masterful musician and the heart of a musical poet. His innovative playing can be very lyrical and heartfelt on ballads, and then flat out smoldering to lay down some swinging grooves on the uptempo pieces. His Quartets on these recordings provide a great environment for some dynamic musical exchanges that can only be described as excellence in motion. There are no weak moments on either of the three CD's! The music is versatile, introspective and full of life. It would take too much space to fully describe the beautiful listening experiences found here. My advice would be to grab this collection and enjoy these wonderful sounds that this underrated musician created over 30 years ago. Then pick up "Live At Belleville" to complete your journey and the full circle. You will not be disappointed. These treasures would make an excellent addition to your music library.
I have to give a special shout-out to Manfred Eicher and ECM for releasing these jewels. I strongly encourage them to get cracking on the "Jack Dejohnette Directions" and "John Abercrombie Quartet" recordings that are still in the vaults. These early recordings also deserve to be made available for us to enjoy - so get it done!
Peace!"
