CD ReviewsReaching Shangri-la Bud Kelly | san francisco, ca. usa | 07/11/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "Aqua Velvets fans will be in Paradise with this new release Reaching Shangri-la. Including new original songs by guitarist Miles Corbin and instrumental renditions of some classic songs by one of Corbin's fave 60's groups the Shangri-Las. "Leader of the Pack" is astounding and cool, "Out in the Streets" is romantic and riveting. The title track "Reaching Shangrila" is pure magic. Corbin says this is the best AVs cd in a decade. Recorded in Corbins' mountain getaway Tiki Hut Studio in Paradise, Ca. The sound is a return to the very first Av release featuring melodic echoey guitars, drums, bass and an occasional Ennio Moricone keyboard. Beautiful and mysterious. The version of "Remember Walkin in the Sand" is absolutely gorgeous and in keeping with Aqua Velvet signature 'Guitar Noir' stylings. Five Stars!" The boys reach Shangri-La Jim Conrad | 07/13/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "The Aqua Velvets are far & away the standout musicians of the '90's generation who tapped into the vast potential of '60's lounge, surf, & "easy listening" catalogues.
Dating to the 1980's, The AV's have now stood the test of time partially because they're reverent to their influences, the sincerity shining through in the quality on all fronts: thought-out arrangements, polished (but not overly slick) production, and dignified presentation from soundstage to packaging. So it stands to reason they would eventually "go overt" with a recording named for a favorite: The Shangri-La's. A mix originals and cover versions of Shangri-La's hit songs, what's most remarkable about Reaching Shangri-La is how mature Miles Corbin's vision as a professional musician has become. From concept to execution, the subtlety with which these songs are conducted will fail to catch your attention...initially. As one returns to it, time and again, appreciation becomes profound. Purity of tunefulness here is pursued so gradually that one virtually never notices how gently certain elements have been balanced during the mix, depending upon the need for either emphasis or sublimation...EXCLUSIVELY as needed to reach the intended emotion. Nice work." |
