Synopsis

Album Description
From the thick of the traditional music scene, April Verch's fiddling is emerging as a wonderful breath of fresh air. Though she has deep roots in the fiddling of her native Ottawa Valley, on VERCHuosity April steps out in a big way and weds her musical world to the world of other fiddle traditions. The finest points of all these are revealed in this wonderful collection of tunes. Here are inspired takes on French Canadian, southern Appalachian, Scottish and Brazilian melodies, along with fine original compositions that righteously tear the house down. April's music takes precisely the right kinds of chances and succeeds brilliantly. More than all that, VERCHuosity is just a big bunch of fun. Every once in a long while you'll run across a gifted artist whose creative energies slide right through all the technical stuff and touch down directly into the colorful, passionate expression of a very personal story. April Verch is definitely one of those players. - Bruce Molsky

Eh-plus!
Rodger Collins | New Orleans, Louisiana | 02/07/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Four words: This One's A Keeper. Tasty, tasteful and diverse, I play this one over and over without ever tiring of it, and for me that's saying a lot. This, her first US release, is so good it made me immediately start searching around for how to get her Canadian stuff. April tackles Canadian Celtic reels as well as oldtime Appalachian and Swing styles, all with a confident energy and a teasingly sly slide (especially in "Sneaky"). Maybe "Verchuosity" is so listenable because of its diversity- as you listen through the CD it's constantly changing moods, from swingy to mysterious to the irresistibly funky "Diabinho Malucco" (hey, anyone who puts a Jacob do Bandolim tune on their CD gets my immediate attention)... and all of them infectious. Her violin tone is rosy warm, her timing very satisfying. No matter what one's favourite style is, if Verchuosity doesn't reach you, see your doctor. And she's only 22!? Life is good."
