Synopsis

Album Description
Until a few decades ago the name of composer Antonio Rosetti (1750-1792) was known only to a few specialists.Yet to his contemporaries his name was one to be mentioned--not without reason--in the same breath as Haydn and Mozart. In particular, his concertos, symphonies, and wind music belong to the most significant works of the Viennese classical period, alongside those of the "Great Three." This recording presents a cross-section of Rosetti's symphonic work, concentrating on less-often-played pieces, to give a clear and artistically valid idea of the master's compositional style.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a superb value. If you are interested in collecting Rosetti's Symphonies, it's worth noting that none of the works on this album duplicate the selections on the Matthias Bamert/London Mozart Players CD. I have both, and find that Rosetti is very contagious. The Symphonies are well constructed and have an engaging fluency that takes you back to the era in which they were written. They are not grand symphonies, but they achieve everything they attempt. The playing of the Lithuanian orchestra is very good, perhaps not on the same level as the London Mozart Players' but nevertheless totally winning in their Middle European sense of style. The sound engineering is superb, some of the best I have heard from Arte Nova. Here is a forgotten composer really worth rediscovering."
