Synopsis

Product Description
Telemann's Solo Violin Fantasias are inevitably thought of within the context of J.S. Bach's more famous and elaborate works for solo violin, yet these pieces possess a very appealing sensibility. They exhibit a textural clarity and directness of expression that gently point towards the aesthetic of the coming classical era. The orientation of these performances displays an awareness of Baroque performance practice within the context of using a modern violin and bow (a Vuillaume and Sartory, respectively). This is the first recording of these Fantasias done by an American violinist. It was made in a beautiful old New England Church with acoustics that provide both resonance and clarity.

CD Reviews

Can't play it enough
M. Fuller | USA | 01/10/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the baroque solo violin repertoire, there are probably hundreds of recordings of the Bach sonatas and partitas, and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting somebody performing them as recital pieces or encores. These Telemann works, you don't hear nearly as often. But you should; while in some ways simpler and less technically demanding, they have every bit as much variety and opportunity for expression.

This recording brings them to life beautifully. The playing is excellent, and the sound of the recording venue sets it off perfectly; you can hear the space, and a single violin filling it."
A real surprise

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is satisfying on two levels: the fantasias, which I had never heard before (they must be rarely played in concert), are beautiful in much more than merely superficial ways and second only to the Bach partitas and sonatas in this regard; and I can't imagine their being played with more virtuosity and authority than that provided by Mr. Princiotti, heretofore unknown to me.

If you ever suspected that there may be first-rate musicians whose only differences from their marquee brethren are major-label promotions and the punishing cycle of international concertizing, Mr. Princiotti is the proof. In this case neither Perlman nor Kremer nor Bell nor any other big names have alternative renditions. If you love solo violin and want to expand your range of available options from Bach, Paganini, Ysaye, Bartok, Prokofiev, et al, you'll welcome this addition."
