"Lutenist Andrew Maginley performs works by J. S. Bach (Cello Suite no. 1/BWV 1007), S. L Weiss (Sonata no. 36 in d minor), and Adam Falckenhagen (Sonata no. 5 in F Major). Through deft performances and copious liner notes, Maginley traces the development of German lute music in the late Baroque period.
Purists might question Maginley's adaptation of Bach's popular "Cello suite no. 1", but Maginley argues in his notes that Bach may have originally composed this suite on a "lautenwerk" (a lute/harpsichord hybrid).
Overall, Maginley's performances are elegant and eloquent, and are enhanced by crisp production values.
Pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the soul, "The Baroque Lute" is perfect for a rainy Saturday afternoon, or to calm one's frazzled nerves at the end of a long day."
