"Andrew Hill and Bobby Hutcherson play beautifully together, intertwining lines that grow out of one another. Hill's technique is passive and responsive, not really domineering enough for a trio, so Hutcherson's presence completes him. The absence of horns is a plus in this case, letting the music float more than it would if there were more contrast in timbres. Elvin plays great in a different context (almost a third keyboard in a way) and Richard Davis is up to his usual high standards (they play great in 7/8). Andrew Hill quietly explored areas of "new" jazz with a rare depth of thought. His subtlety in a time of overt expressionism seems to have cost him the level of attention I feel his music deserves. I hope a more affordable edition of this comes along."
