Synopsis

Album Description
Relying on only her voice and scruffy electric guitar to carry her songs, Andrea Maxand delivers an outstanding debut album showcasing very personal and intricate lyrics. With Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) assisting on samples and loops, Angel Hat takes a unique, yet powerful slant on the traditional themes of love and loss.

Thorns leaking honey

(4 out of 5 stars)

"In 1974 Nick Lowe asked the world "What's so funny about Peace, Love and Understanding?" Elvis Costello & The Attractions in 1980 repeated the question. Andrea Maxand has successfully answered the question with her song `Peace on TV.' This song is the cornerstone a gentle indictment entitled `Angel Hat.' These songs are highly deceptive. That is to say they are far from obvious. The songs come to you wrapped in sweet little vocal melodies tied with a bow of guitar strings. Yet the staccato rhythm of Andrea Maxand's voice on songs like `Survival of the Sentiment' and `When God Shuts the Door' betrays the songs' intentions. Some of the lyrics on this record are downright biting in the context of the music. Chris Walla's production is surprising on the tracks `Distraction' and `Spun.' These songs are given a vaguely foreboding atmosphere. It's the same kind of feeling I used to get from watching Hammer Film Festivals on my old black and white TV. Spooky fun."
