Andre put up with the effects of the revolution on the cultural life of the country for five years. Then in 1922 he gave up his post as assistant director of the Grand Opera house in St. Petersburg and set off on the dangerous journey to America. There he prospered immediately. By 1931 he had his own CBS radio show, conducting a forty five piece orchestra, playing lush arrangements some of them his own. Following in the footsteps of the legendary Paul Whiteman, Kostelanetz bridged the gap between concert and dance music, between the classics and pop tunes.
