Synopsis

The international appeal of the blues comes home with a fiery flourish on the breakout album by youthful Yugoslavian singer/guitarist Ana Popovic. Her 2001 debut disc Hush! effectively displayed her potential and Comfort to the Soul demonstrates she's well on the road to realizing much of it. Popovic, who relocated to the Netherlands in 1999, is much more than just the best Belgrade-born blues act. Although it's her rockish energy, expressed on tunes like the opening Melissa Etheridge-style "Don't Bear Down on Me," that will garner the majority of the attention, the most impressive aspect of her music is its diversity. She exhibits some Elmore James-inspired slide guitar on a couple of tracks (most notably on an innovative up-tempo take on Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' On Top of the World"), shoots off more than a few hard-edged rocking blues solos elsewhere, and utilizes her affinity for jazz guitar in several creative contexts. Popovic's music, like her blues persona, is obviously still a work in progress but her second album provides as much pleasure in the present as it does promise for the future.--Michael Point

"I had the chance to meet Ana at the WC Handy awards in Memphis this year. She played at a couple of jams and took everybody by suprise. She is a well versed guitar player/song writer. Her new CD, Comfort to the Soul has something for everyone. Since her first CD Hush, she has grown even more as an artist in her own right. I would recommend this CD highly! Don't be left out on what's happening in the music world. Ana is sure to become a household name. If you get a chance to see her live I would make every effort to do so! She is even better live than on her albums! Love and Blues..........."

"In a few spots, she may be beginning to find "her sound" or "her voice," but in my opinion, most of it sounds like she's in sort of a Tinsley Ellis meets Deborah Coleman mode. A bit over-produced and "busy" overall. Ana, give us your version of some stripped-down Delta or Chicago blues in your next effort. At least a coupla tunes each... show us you can hold back and let the music rip our hearts out. Please lose the chorus pedal."
