Synopsis

Amazon.com
Ana Moura was a rock singer in her native Portugal before succumbing the lure of fado, a folk-music tradition related to American blues, Argentinean tango, Greek rembetika, and even more closely to Brazilian choro and Cape Verdean morna. Like its aforementioned cousins, fado originated on the wrong side of town. Black-clad shady ladies sang of romantic disappointments and life on the wild side. Although it is a poetry of despair, it is nonetheless sensuously melodic, as well as touchingly stoic, proud, and very adult. The slings of fortune are not met with cringing, but rather a sexy shrug. It has long since become somewhat gentrified but fado has retained all of its bittersweet passion and ability to break hearts, especially when interpreted by a vocalist of Ms. Moura's stature. Like the illustrious Amalia Rodrigues, her band is graced by the talents of composer-producer-arranger-guitarist Jorge Fernando, whose taste and elegance have fashioned a lush, string-driven acoustic setting for her luscious café-au-lait alto. Her soaring trills of ancient Moorish vintage rise above subterranean depths of grief and angst, seeming to pierce the very heavens with roundelays of indignant resignation. --Christina Roden

CD Reviews

It belongs in your cd player!

"If you are a Fado lover, you are about to go crazy on this cd, and even if you are not a Fado fan, there is no way that this cd doesn't draw your attention once you listen to it. Ana Moura has an spectacular voice and there's not a single song that I dislike on this record, the more I listen to it, the more I fall in love with its songs. The lyrics are full of meaning and passion, and the music just helps to bring the lyrics to life. If you understand Portuguese you'll be delighted by the clear accent of Ms Moura, and if you don't, you'll find an English translation of the lyrics, although I have to say that some of them are not so accurate. Aconteceu is a must, and I just can't have enough of it."
And hopefully, more to come

"This is an amazing lady who has a great feel for music and not just classic Fado.

She previously sang rock and blues (recently sang with Mick Jagger and the Stones in Lisbon on the Big Bang Tour).

Her first release was breathtaking. All the nostalgia, the fate, the profound feeling that is Fado. I was totally amazed.

By the way several new Fado singers released new albums at the same time and I have them all, This Lady rates at the top for me.

This second CD has 20 tracks. The first 10 are current Fado and they are just brilliant. The title track is an absolute masterpiece

The second ten are older more conservative Fado which I am not quite as familiar with. But you only have to hear the simplicity of the sound, the emotion coming through to know that this lady is a real artiste

She has now released a third CD 'para alem da Saudade'

I have already ordered it and it is winging it's way to me as I listen to

Aconceteu once again

BTW I give this four stars, not three"

"After hearing a cut from her latest album on NPR, I immediately ordered it. It contains Ana's masterful singing and the best guitarists you will likely ever hear. Give this a listen to broaden your misical horizon! Highly recommended!"
