An extremely interest introduction to 20th century music

"What I like most about small independent record companies is their releasing little known pieces such as are found in the Cedille Records (CDR 90000 046) with flutist Mary Stolper and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra under Paul Freeman. While the orchestra may not be top drawer, the soloist certainly is and this disc deserves a wide hearing. We have five composers represented here: Lita Grier ("Renascence: Concertinto for Flute and Orchestra"), Charles Tomlinson Griffes ("Poem for Flute and Orchestra"), Virgil Thomson ("Concerto for Flute, Strings, Harp and Percussion"), Kent Kennan ("Night Soliloquy for Flute, Strings and Piano"), and Elie Siegmeister ("Concerto for Flute and Orchestra"). As you can tell by now, the name of this CD is a bit misleading but its historical interest is undoubted. Spanning the years from 1918 to 1996, the music gives us a brief history of 20th century music, let alone flute music, that can be a valuable addition to any music class. Do not purchase this with the expectation of lovely music in the Mozart style--although now and then there will be a passage of tender beauty. The fairly generous notes in the slim booklet will give you most of what you want to know about the composers and the pieces played here. This is not for casual listening; the rewards will not come that easily."
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Mary is a gifted performer.

"This CD is a FEAST for the ears. Mary's note range and clarity within it are very impressive."
