"Those who only know this composer from his funny and often brilliant parodies as "P.D.Q. Bach" might be surprised to learn that Peter Schickele is a wonderful composer very much in the tradition of Copland, Bernstein, etc.
This selection of chamber works is a fine representation of this work in this genre. The CD contains two works which include piano in their instrumentation. In addition to the Brahmsian Quartet for Piano, Clarinet Violin and Cello there are three lesser known works, one for piano and ensemble, one for a flute ensemble and and Octet.
All works incorporate early jazz rhythms, folk-like melodies and harmonies very pleasing to the ear. This is not simplistic music, just accessible. Schickele is a brilliant and eclectic man with many talents and his talent for composition is considerable.
The American chamber ensemble does admirably in bringing these works to light. They clearly have a sensitivity and passion for this music.
As far as I can tell only the Quartet has been recorded before. The others are recording premieres. So sit back and prepare to be charmed and entertained by this 20/21st Century side of P.D.Q. Bach."
